Situation Unraveler

A short first pass through a difficult situation. We do not hunt for a “correct answer” — we organize the data, separate facts from assumptions, and identify what is worth checking next.

What is this?

This is not advice or a forecast. It is a minimal diagnostic stage: step by step we separate events from explanations, the goal from the route, your inner state from external facts, and identify what information is still missing for the next decision.

1. What is happening?

Briefly describe what happened and what is happening now. Who or what is involved? Which part of the situation worries you or requires a decision? Do not explain why it happened yet — here we only need the overall picture.

2. What do you want?

Describe the result you want without tying it to one specific method. For example, “to have a healthy mutual relationship” is a goal, while “for this particular person to come back” may be only one route toward it. One route can close while the goal remains.

Check yourself: does what you wrote above describe the desired end state, or already a specific way of reaching it?

3. What do you know for sure?

Write only what can be reasonably checked: specific events, statements, messages, numbers, documents, and observable actions. Do not add motives or explanations here. “She did not reply for two days” is a fact. “She is ignoring me because she is hurt” is already a conclusion.

How well is the cause of what is happening supported by actual data? Not “it feels like”, but whether there are concrete grounds to treat the cause as established.

4. What are you only assuming?

Сюди якраз належать формулювання «мабуть», «скоріше за все», «думаю, що», «він/вона зробив це тому що…».Now separately write down what you think about causes, motives, intentions, or future developments but cannot confirm. This is where phrases such as “probably”, “most likely”, “I think that”, or “he/she did this because…” belong.

Looking at your whole picture, what does it rely on more: verified information or your interpretation of that information?

5. What state are you in while looking at this situation?

Shift attention from the situation itself to yourself inside it. What do you feel when you think about it right now? An emotion is not an error and does not automatically make your conclusions false, but a strong state can change your attention, the weight you give to facts, and even which options you notice.

Which option best describes your dominant state right now? Choose the closest one even if you feel several things at once.

Наскільки сильно цей стан захоплює увагу: він лише фоном, помітно впливає на думки чи майже визначає їх?How strongly does this state occupy your attention: is it only in the background, does it noticeably influence your thoughts, or does it almost dominate them?

How do you assess its influence: does it help you focus, barely change the picture, or might it make you overvalue some information and undervalue other information?

6. What has changed?

Compare the situation now with how it was earlier. What became more or less frequent? What appeared, disappeared, intensified, or weakened? Try to see not one vivid event but the direction of change over time.

If you set aside the latest episode and look across several events over time, what overall movement do you see?

7. What moves do you currently see?

Do not choose the “right” option yet. Simply list different actions that are realistically available: act, talk, wait, refuse, verify information, change conditions, or deliberately do nothing for a while. An unpleasant option is still an option.

After making the list, check how many genuinely different routes toward the desired outcome you have, rather than several variations of the same route.

Separate what you can do yourself from what depends on other people, chance, or external conditions. How much is the final outcome actually within your sphere of influence?

8. What information is missing?

Think about which unknown currently blocks the next step most. What do you not know about causes, another party, consequences, or alternatives? Then ask whether a small action could produce that information instead of prolonged guessing.

If you choose one main gap, which type is it closest to?
